Between Love and Lies

Ayesha stood silently beneath the old tree, trying to understand Zain’s words.

Your family destroyed ours.

The sentence echoed in her mind like a painful accusation. She wanted to believe there was some mistake, that Zain had misunderstood his father. But the sadness in his eyes told her that he believed every word.

“Do you believe I’m responsible for something my family might have done?” she asked quietly.

Zain looked at her. “I don’t know what to believe anymore, Ayesha. All my life, my father has refused to talk about my mother. Whenever I ask him about her disappearance, he tells me to forget the past.”

“Then why did you approach me?”

“Because when I saw that letter, I recognized my mother’s handwriting.”

Ayesha’s eyes widened. “You’ve seen it before?”

Zain nodded. “I found some of her old letters in my father’s study. One of them had the same little heart drawn at the bottom.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Ayesha whispered, “What if our parents are hiding the same truth from both of us?”

“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”

Before she could reply, Zain’s phone rang again. His father was calling.

Zain answered reluctantly.

“Where are you?” his father demanded.

“I’m at the university.”

“Are you with that girl?”

Zain glanced at Ayesha. “Yes.”

“Leave immediately. I warned you never to get involved with her family!”

The call ended abruptly.

Zain stared at his phone, his jaw tightening.

Ayesha wiped away a tear. “You should go. I don’t want you fighting with your father because of me.”

He took a step toward her. “This isn’t your fault.”

“Then find out the truth,” she replied. “Because I can’t keep living with questions.”

Zain nodded. “I promise I will.”

As he walked away, Ayesha watched him disappear through the garden gate. She couldn’t explain why his pain hurt her so deeply. Perhaps it was because, for the first time, someone else understood what it felt like to live with unanswered questions.

Or perhaps her heart was beginning to feel something she wasn’t ready to admit.

That evening, Ayesha confronted her father again.

“Baba, I met Zain today.”

Her father slowly put down his cup of tea.

“You met him?”

“He told me his mother knew our family. He said you were the last person to see her before she disappeared. Is that true?”

Her father’s face turned pale.

“Who told you that?”

“Please don’t ask me another question! Just tell me the truth.”

For a long moment, he remained silent.

Finally, he said, “Zain’s mother, Sara, was my closest friend many years ago. Something terrible happened between our families, and we lost contact.”

“What happened?”

“I can’t explain it tonight.”

Ayesha shook her head in frustration. “You always say that!”

She hurried upstairs before he could stop her.

Inside her bedroom, she opened the drawer and took out the mysterious letter. She read the faded words once more, then turned it over.

Ask your father.

Now she understood why.

But she still didn’t understand what her father was so afraid of.

The next morning, Ayesha received a message from Zain.

“I found something. Can we meet after classes?”

Her heart began to race.

They met in the university library that afternoon. Zain placed an old photograph on the table between them.

It showed two young men and a woman standing outside a beautiful house. Ayesha immediately recognized her father in the picture. Beside him stood a woman with kind eyes—the woman Zain had shown her in another photograph.

Sara.

But there was something else.

Ayesha picked up the photograph and turned it over.

Written on the back were the words:

“For the family we promised to protect. Forever.”

Below the message were two signatures: her father’s and Sara’s.

“Why would they write this?” Ayesha whispered.

Zain looked at her, his expression serious.

“I don’t know. But there’s one more thing you should see.”

He took a folded document from his bag.

Before he could open it, Ayesha’s phone rang.

It was her mother.

Her voice trembled as she spoke.

“Ayesha, come home immediately. Your father has collapsed.”

Ayesha jumped to her feet, knocking the chair behind her.

“What? Mama, is he okay?”

“I don’t know, sweetheart. Please hurry!”

Ayesha rushed toward the library exit. Zain followed her without hesitation.

“I’m coming with you,” he said.

She wanted to refuse, but she was too frightened to argue.

As they hurried toward the university gate, Zain held her hand to steady her when she stumbled.

For one brief moment, she looked at him.

Despite everything separating their families, he was the only person beside her when she needed someone most.

And although neither of them dared to say it aloud, something had begun to change between their hearts.

Something powerful.

Something dangerous.

Because the truth they were chasing might bring them closer than they had ever imagined—or tear them apart forever.
